Phuket Country Club holds a genuine piece of Thai golf history: opened in 1989, it was the island's first golf course and the first course of international standard anywhere in Southern Thailand. Designed by Dr. Sukitti Klangvisai — who later also designed Loch Palm — the club sits in Kathu, roughly equidistant between Patong Beach and Phuket Town, and now spans 27 holes across two courses: the original 18-hole "Old Course" and a 9-hole "Country Club Course" added in 2000.
The Old Course routes through three distinct environments over its 18 holes — six holes through undulating hills, six across level ground, and six through shaded forest — a deliberate variety that keeps the round from feeling repetitive despite its relatively forgiving nature. Its centerpiece is the par-5 10th, an elevated tee shot that wraps 180 degrees around a lake in a U-shape; long hitters can attempt to cut the corner for a shot at eagle or even a hole-in-one, while more conservative golfers can lay up safely — a genuine risk-reward decision that has made it one of the most recognized holes in Phuket golf. Water returns at the par-4 16th and again at the island-green par-3 17th.
More than three decades on, the course's large, forgiving fairways continue to suit mid-to-high handicap golfers particularly well, even as its clubhouse facilities have aged relative to Phuket's newer resort courses.
