Katathong Golf Resort & Spa sits in a secluded valley in Phang Nga province, roughly an hour's drive north of Phuket, on land with a golf-relevant history stretching back further than almost any course in the region: the site was mined for tin as far back as the 15th century, with mining continuing into the 1900s before the land was left vacant. The current owner's family has ties to that original mining industry, and the golf course — nicknamed "The Valley of Dreams" — was developed to take advantage of the site's aging open-cast mine pits, with some original mining equipment still visible along several fairways today.
The course is bordered by three mountains and surrounded by rainforest, natural waterfalls, and streams, with mountain views available from nearly every hole. Rather than the beach-resort character of most Phuket courses, Katathong's layout follows the land's natural contours through undulating hills, using the terrain's existing water features rather than manufactured hazards — a more rugged, nature-forward character than golfers typically find closer to the coast. Numerous water hazards and narrow fairways mean the round rewards course management and accuracy over raw distance, testing both high- and low-handicap golfers.
Katathong operates as a full resort with on-site accommodation, making it a natural fit for golfers who want to combine their round with an overnight stay rather than a same-day return trip.
