Sea Pines Golf Club opened in September 2010, designed by Major General Weerayudth Phetbuasak, on land with a genuinely distinctive history. Originally developed by the Royal Forestry Department, the site was taken over by the Royal Thai Army under Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat as a retreat for soldiers and veterans, and the course still operates today as “Army Golf Club II” — with army officers and their guests given priority for tee times, which is worth factoring into your booking plans.
The layout is genuinely links-style, with six holes running right along the beach on the Gulf of Thailand and the remainder heading toward the mountains, the two halves separated by a railway line. Water hazards feature throughout, and combined with the sea wind, the course has earned a reputation — repeated by more than one source — as the toughest test in the Hua Hin area.
The signature hole is the par-3 17th, an all-carry shot over water to an undulating peninsula green with ocean views — the kind of closing stretch that tests nerve as much as skill. If you want Hua Hin’s most challenging round, this is consistently the course golfers point to.
