The playing experience

Make room in the day for the drive and a proper warm-up. Changes in elevation can alter how far a shot actually plays, so use the caddie's local knowledge alongside your own distance judgement. For a multi-course holiday, this setting adds a different visual and playing rhythm to flatter layouts.

Mountain Creek is Thailand's only golf course designed by Seve Ballesteros — the Spanish golfing legend, five-time major winner, and former World No. 1 — and it plays like it. Opened in 2011 on land past Pak Chong on the road toward Korat, the resort overlooks the Lam Takhong Lake and Dam in Sikhio, surrounded by dense forest and hilly terrain.

The 27 holes are split into three distinct 9-hole loops, each named for the terrain it covers: Highlands, which plays relatively flat and is the gentlest of the three; and Creek and Valley, which Ballesteros designed to be the most interesting and demanding of the set. A signature S-shaped bunker on Hole 3 is a recognizable Ballesteros touch. All three loops start and finish at the same expansive clubhouse, making it easy to combine any two nines into an 18-hole round.

This is not a course that forgives a loose swing. Jungle frames many fairways, hazards are positioned to catch shots from multiple angles, and the greens are severely undulated — miss to the wrong side of a pin here and a three-putt is a real risk.
